Clothes Dryers
Explore heating, airflow and drying symptoms before authorizing a repair.
Understand the symptoms.
Open symptom pathwayDryer taking too long: loading and airflow checks
Warm clothing that stays damp may point to poor airflow or an unsuitable load rather than a complete loss of heat. This guide concerns conventional vented dryers.
Dryer tumbling without heat: start with the cycle
Check the selected program and whether the load receives heat. Check whether the selected program is intended to produce heat.
Dryer troubleshooting: heat, airflow and drying time
Separate a load that stays cool from one that becomes warm but remains damp. That distinction makes the next guide more useful.
Choose a guide by what happened
Start with the program name, fabric mix and result. A cycle designed to move unheated air has a different purpose from a heated drying cycle. Note whether the drum turns and whether the problem affects every load or mainly bulky items. Describe warmth from your previous normal use; a new test run is unnecessary when there are warning signs.
Identify the dryer design: conventional vented, condenser or heat pump. An outdoor-exhaust check applies to a vented dryer. A different design needs the maintenance instructions supplied with that model.
A useful first-check sequence
Whirlpool's long-drying guidance includes load size, cycle selection and lint-filter care. Use a suitable load that can tumble freely and compare the chosen program with the care labels. Clean the user-accessible lint screen according to the manual. For a vented dryer, note a visibly crushed exhaust section only when it can be seen without moving the machine.
CPSC identifies accumulated lint and restricted exhaust as fire concerns. A recurring long-drying problem deserves attention even if the load eventually dries. Use qualified help for concealed exhaust sections, internal cleaning and gas or electrical work.
Prepare an effective service request
Give the technician the model, fuel type and exhaust arrangement. Explain whether the issue is missing heat, extended drying or an unusual stop. Ask who handles an obstructed household exhaust: the appliance company, an installer or a separate vent-cleaning provider. This keeps two different jobs from being mistaken for the same repair.
Put the repair decision in context
Compare the complete scope in /tools/quote-comparison. A heating repair quote and an exhaust-service quote describe different work. When considering replacement, include removal, the correct connection and any required vent work in /tools/repair-vs-replace. Keep an energy comparison separate until you have usable consumption figures.
