Cooktop troubleshooting: cookware, controls and heat

Begin with the cooktop type and whether one cooking zone or the whole appliance is affected. Induction and conventional electric surfaces require different checks.

Choose a guide by what happened

For induction, note the pan, cooking zone and exact message or flashing display. For a conventional electric surface, describe weak heat, an inactive zone or an unexpected cycling pattern. The library currently covers induction pan detection and electric heating performance; select the guide that matches that scope.

Write down the control setting and whether other zones behave normally. Keep observations from ordinary use rather than repeating a problem simply to demonstrate it. The model information will determine which display messages and user controls apply.

A useful first-check sequence

GE's induction guidance includes magnetic cookware, a flat base, suitable pan size and centering. With the surface cool, compare the cookware with the owner's manual before concluding that a burner needs repair. The timing of a flashing display is model specific.

For conventional electric cooking, follow the separate cookware and control guidance in the electric-surface guide. Keep the distinction between a cooking-vessel issue and a confirmed appliance fault clear in your notes. Stop using a damaged surface and arrange appropriate service.

Prepare an effective service request

Give the technician the model, zone involved and pan details. Include a photo of the message and explain whether another suitable pan previously worked on that zone. Ask what the diagnostic visit includes and how the repair will be tested. Leave internal electrical and supply assessment to qualified service.

Put the repair decision in context

Request replacement dimensions and an installation quote before making a cost comparison. A cooktop price alone may exclude changes required by the selected model. Enter actual totals into /tools/repair-vs-replace. Compare scope and warranty in /tools/quote-comparison when technicians propose different work for the same observation.
