Dishwashers
Make sense of drainage, cleaning and drying observations.
Understand the symptoms.
Open symptom pathwayDishwasher leaving water: normal sump or drainage problem?
Water pooled across the tub after a completed cycle differs from moisture deep in the filter area. Document where water remains before assuming a pump failure.
Dishes still dirty: loading, spray and filter checks
Cleaning problems may be limited to one rack or affect the whole load. Use the pattern to choose useful questions and observations.
Dishwasher troubleshooting: drainage and cleaning
A wet tub and dirty dishes can have different explanations. Identify the result of a completed cycle before choosing a guide.
Choose a guide by what happened
Use the standing-water guide when water remains above the usual residual area or returns after the cycle. Use the cleaning guide when the cycle completes but dishes retain food or residue. Note whether a detergent dispenser opened and whether large items blocked the racks. These are descriptions to record, not instructions to reach into a moving machine.
Include any recent sink, disposal or dishwasher installation. That work can change the drainage arrangement. Tell the service provider about it before assuming the dishwasher itself needs a new component.
A useful first-check sequence
Whirlpool identifies accessible filter care, hose routing and the sink connection as relevant to drainage. Start with the model's instructions for a user-serviceable filter and the normal cancel/drain control sequence. Have a qualified installer assess concealed connections or an installation change.
For cleaning performance, first compare loading and detergent use with the owner's manual. Keep a record of whether every load is affected or only a particular rack or item. A consistent description makes a service conversation more specific than the general statement that the dishwasher does not work.
Prepare an effective service request
Photograph the water level after the program and preserve the exact display message. Note the model, cycle name and timing of the problem. Ask whether the quote includes the appliance drain path, the household sink connection or both. Request a separate explanation when plumbing work is proposed.
Put the repair decision in context
Use /tools/quote-comparison to put diagnosis, labor, parts and any installation work on separate lines. For replacement, include removal and connection costs, not only the displayed appliance price. Review cabinet fit and installation requirements with the installer before entering a replacement total into /tools/repair-vs-replace.
